[도민시론] 여행의 이유
몇년간 힘들었던 해외여행이라 큰 맘 먹고 온 가족들이 쌈짓돈을 털어 2주에 걸쳐 로마·나폴리·피렌체·베네치아·밀라노까지 이탈리아를 여행했다.
고대 도시 로마, 항구 도시 나폴리, 중세도시 피렌체, 물의 도시 베니스, 현대 도시 밀라노를 오가며 몇 천년의 시간과 공간의 흐름을 제대로 체험하며 하루하루 꿈과 생을 오갔다. 비수기라 사람도 많이 없고 날씨는 여름에 비해 칙칙하긴 했지만 쾌적하게 명소들을 둘러보고 다닐 수 있어 좋았다.
생각보다 생활에서 누리고 삶을 차지하는 많은 것들의 근본이 이탈리아에 있는데 한국에 살면서 흔하게 피자나 파스타를 먹고 커피를 마시면서도 내가 누리는 이것들의 기원이나 근본에 대해 막연하게 이탈리아 음식이고 스타일이구나 생각만 했지 이곳에 와서 직접 경험하고 맛보니 감회가 새롭다. ‘모든 길은 로마로 통한다’는 말처럼 정말 이탈리아 모든 도시에 문명의 시작 로마의 상징인 돌길이 깔려 있었다. 울퉁불퉁한 돌길에 캐리어를 힘겹게 끌고 호텔을 바꿔 이동할 때마다 오래된 것들을 유지하고 보수하면서 지켜나가는 이곳 사람들의 정체성과 역사 오랜 시민 의식이 존경스러우면서 부러웠다. 모든 것이 느리고 불편했지만 한편으론 느긋했고 확실했다.
로마 곳곳에는 교과서에서 보던 작품들이 흔하게 전시되어 있고 장엄하고 화려한 건축과 미술은 아름다움을 넘어 경이롭다. 교회를 믿진 않지만 교회를 위해 마음 모아 이 모든 것들을 탄생시킨 인간의 의지와 노력, 그리고 그것을 가능하게 한 재능에 감탄하지 않을 수 없다. 교회가 없었다면, 인간이 신을 믿지 않았다면 이 모든 것이 가능할 수 있었을까?
신은 인간에게 영감의 원천이 되어주고 소재가 되었으며 시대의 삶 그 자체였다. 과학이 없던 시절 나약하고 불안한 인간의 마음을 잠재우고 안정시킨 것은 약도 아니고 의사도 아닌 성직자들과 성경, 신이었다. 신 중심의 세상에서 탄생한 예술의 극치가 인간을 진화시켰다. 과학과 기술, 인간이 중심인 지금 이 시대의 극치는 무엇일까? 로마에는 시대의 마음과 의지가 곳곳에 담겨있다. 시대를 느낄 수 있는 시간과 공간에 존재하는 것만으로 여행이 값지다.
‘한국의 나폴리’라는 통영은 가봤어도 진짜 나폴리를 보게 될 줄이야. 나폴리를 지나 만나는 포지타노 해변은 꿈같고 그림같다. 설명될 수 없는 경이로움을 지녔다. 물에 떠있는 도시 베네치아는 어떻고. 베네치아는 그 도시에 들어선 순간부터 그 어떤 관람이나 특출난 맛집이 없어도 그곳에 존재한다는 것 자체가 여행이고 관람이다. 밀라노 사람들은 확실히 옷을 잘 입는다. 개성 있다. 색깔도 다양하게 입고 디자인이나 스타일도 어떤 유행을 따르는 느낌이 아니라 본인만의 정체성이 느껴지게 입는달까. 나이든 사람들도 보라색 새틴 점퍼를 멋지게 소화하고 70대쯤 되어 보이는 할머니가 은색 머리를 짧게 커트하고 선글라스를 낀 채 롱부츠를 신고 걸어가더라. 길거리에서 마주쳐 지나가는 뒷모습을 한참 서서 봤다. 너무 멋있어서.
이탈리아는 한참 크리스마스 시즌이다. 그들에게 크리스마스는 기념일을 넘어 국가적 명절이다. 사람들의 들뜬 분위기 틈에서 두오모 광장의 유독 큰 트리가 더욱 빛난다. 피렌체 오래된 골목길의 작은 가게들에서 판매하는 물건들 공예품 먹거리들은 이곳에 더 오래 머물고 싶게 만든다. 각각의 도시마다 다른 이야기와 정체성을 지녔다는 것만으로 이탈리아인들의 남다른 자부심이 이해된다. 기차 타고, 배 타고, 비행기 타고, 택시도 타고 온 도시를 누비면서 만끽했다. 대부분은 발 딛고 걸었다. 눈 닿는 모든 것이 낯설고 즐거웠다. 어느 것에도 엮여있지 않고 아무도 나를 모르는 곳에서 마음 편하게 뚜벅뚜벅 걷기만 해도 신난다.
2주간의 여행이 끝나니 놀라운 것은 한국을 여행하고 싶어졌다는 사실이다. 이탈리아를 깊게 들여다보면서 도리어 한국의 도시들을 더욱 진하게 여행하고 싶어졌다. 한국의 멋, 한국의 맛, 한국의 정체성을 경험하고 싶다. 그것은 더욱 파고들면 지역으로 세분화 될 것이다. 여행은 책으로 읽고 사진으로 보던 텍스트와 이미지를 생생하게 느낄 수 있는 현실이다. 타국의 생소한 풍경과 사소한 문화적 특징들을 마주하며 그 속의 사람들과 섞일 때면 내 안에 존재하는 여러 개의 문이 한꺼번에 열린다. 열린 문으로 기존의 것과는 다른 정보와 생각 이미지들이 밀려와 새로운 나를 만든다. 기존에 알던 것들도 완전히 다른 것이 되어 스며든다. 그래서 여행하는 삶은 언제나 새롭고 성장하는 거겠지. 여유가 된다면 틈틈이 여행하며 살고 싶다. 언제나 새뜻한 마음으로 삶을 마주할 수 있도록.
After years of saving up, my family and I embarked on a two-week journey through Italy, visiting Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice, and Milan. We experienced the flow of time and space through the ages as we traversed ancient Rome, the port city of Naples, the medieval city of Florence, the watery city of Venice, and the modern city of Milan. Despite the weather being somewhat lackluster compared to the summer season, it was pleasant to explore the famous sites without too many crowds.
Living in Korea, I often took for granted the roots and origins of things that are so commonplace in my life, such as pizza, pasta, and coffee. However, being in Italy and experiencing the tastes firsthand, I felt a renewed appreciation for the origin and roots of these things. The saying "all roads lead to Rome" is true, with Rome's signature cobblestone streets paving the way in every Italian city. Although it was challenging to navigate the uneven streets with our luggage while moving from one hotel to another, I respected and envied the identity and historical consciousness of the people who preserve and maintain their ancient buildings and landmarks. While everything was slow and uncomfortable, it was also relaxing and authentic.
Rome is filled with textbook artworks, magnificent architecture, and breathtaking art that goes beyond mere beauty. Even though I am not religious, I couldn't help but admire the determination and effort of the people who created all of this in service of the church, as well as the talent that made it all possible. Without the church, without people believing in God, could any of this have been possible?
God was the source of inspiration and material for humans, as well as the essence of the times themselves. Art, born from a world centered on God, helped to evolve humanity. What is the pinnacle of this era, with science and technology, humans at the center? In Rome, the heart and will of the times are evident everywhere. Being present in a place where you can feel the flow of time and space is what makes travel so valuable.
I had visited Tongyeong, known as "Korea's Naples," before, but I never expected to see the real Naples. Seeing the Positano beach, which we passed through on the way to Naples, was like a dream come true. It had an indescribable sense of wonder. The city of Venice, floating on the water, was also fascinating. Even though there were no particular tourist attractions or famous restaurants, just the fact that the city existed was a sightseeing experience. Milan residents are known for their fashion sense and individuality. They wear a wide range of colors and styles that reflect their own unique identities, rather than following any trends. Even elderly people could be seen rocking purple satin jackets, with a 70-year-old woman sporting a short, silver haircut, sunglasses, and long boots while strutting down the street. I couldn't help but stop and admire their style and confidence.
Italy was in the midst of the Christmas season, where Christmas is not just a holiday but a national festival. The towering tree in Duomo Square shone even brighter amidst the festive mood of the people. The goods and crafts sold in the small shops along the old alleys of Florence made me want to stay here longer. Each city has its own unique story and identity, which makes Italian people so proud. We traveled by train, boat, airplane, and taxi, but mostly on foot. Everything we saw and experienced was unfamiliar and enjoyable. Walking comfortably with no attachments or ties in a place where nobody knows me was exhilarating.
Surprisingly, after our two-week trip, I found myself wanting to travel more in Korea. Having explored Italy in-depth, I wanted to immerse myself in the culture, taste, and identity of Korea
